John Robert Fowles John Robert Fowles was born in England’s Essex County in 1926. As a student at Oxford he discovered the works of the French existentialists and went on to become a Lecturer in English in Paris and London. He also taught English at the Anargyrios & Korgialenios School in Spetses during the early 1950’s. Fowles is best known as the author of the novel “The French Lieutenant's Woman” but his first novel, “The Magus”, partly based on his experiences as an English teacher in Spetses, has perhaps generated the most enduring interest, becoming something of a cult novel, particularly in the U.S. The time spent in Greece was of great importance to Fowles. During his tenure on the island he began to write poetry and to overcome a long-time writing repression.

Poseidonion Grand Hotel The Poseidonion Grand Hotel was built by Sotirios Anargyros, a descendant of one of Spetses Island’s great 18th century shipping families. Anargyros was considered to be a visionary benefactor and was responsible for much of the island’s modern development. In 1899, upon returning from the United States, he began building impressive mansion that he hoped would represent the island’s cosmopolitan atmosphere. Completed in 1914, it soon became one of Spetses’ most famous landmarks and a favourite destination for high society, royalty and the wealthy Athenians of the time. After a painstaking five-year renovation, the hotel was restored to its past glory. Preserving the building’s original architecture, the Poseidonion Grand Hotel, has been fully refurbished with modern facilities, fixtures, and fittings and re-opened its doors in the summer of 2009. The hotel is comprised of two buildings with several rooms and suites having private gardens or balconies offering spectacular views of Dapia Port and the sparkling blue-turquoise sea. |
